Volkswagen follows Audi: ‘no new combustion engines’

Volkswagen, like sister brand Audi, is no longer developing completely new combustion engines. That says CEO Ralf Brandstätter.

A week ago it became known that Audi is no longer working on a new generation of fuel engines. CEO Markus Duesmann installed Automobilwoche declares that it is no longer considered profitable. The current engines therefore have to continue for a long time and will be further refined to continue to meet emission requirements. Volkswagen is following Audi in this, CEO Ralf Brandstätter confirms Automotive News. “I do not expect that we will release a completely new engine family,” said the German.

In the long run, Volkswagen, just like Audi, will probably not be sufficient to reduce the emissions of the existing engines and it is therefore expected that hybrid powertrains will eventually be the only way to continue selling them. For the rest, both brands will greatly expand their electrical offerings in the coming years. Now that Volkswagen and Audi (as R&D leaders of the Volkswagen Group) have announced that they will not develop new combustion engines, there is a good chance that this policy will apply to the entire group.
