Introduces new software with Q6 e-tron and Macan

Volkswagen Group products will receive infotainment software based on Android Automotive in the near future. That software will be kept up to date for up to 15 years after a car is delivered, says the CEO of Cariad – Volkswagen’s software development subsidiary – now.
We already know it from Volvo, Polestar and Renault and BMW will also be dying soon: infotainment software based on Android Automotive, an operating system from Google that has been specially designed for cars. The Volkswagen Group also plans to base the infotainment software for all its models on Android Automotive in the future. It announced this in 2021 during a presentation about Volkswagen’s plans for 2030, but it did so between nose and lips at the time.
Now the intention to use Android Automotive, which will probably be fleshed out for the first time with the introduction of Volkswagen’s PPE platform with the Audi Q6 e-tron and the electric Porsche Macan, is coming to light again. The American tech news website Ars Technica has asked the CEO of Cariad, the software company of the Volkswagen Group, about the updates for Android Automotive in Volkswagen products.
Mobile phones with Android software will no longer be eligible for all software updates after a few years, partly because phones are not designed to last much longer. It is different with cars. That is why Ars Technica submitted the questions. What seems? The Volkswagen Group wants to continue to provide updates for the Android Automotive-based software for up to 15 years after delivery of a car. The concerns that come with using a somewhat older phone, therefore, do not apply to cars with Google software until much later – if Cariad and the Volkswagen Group keep their word.
