Volkswagen has shared a first teaser of Project Trinity, the electric flagship set to hit the market in 2026. Little was known about this, but the teaser image shows which direction Volkswagen wants to take.
It was equally well known that Volkswagen is working on a new electric flagship under the working title Project Trinity. However, the intended range topper has been depicted under a canvas until now. In the new teaser image, the silhouette of the Trinity comes out more clearly. It looks like the car is going to be a coupé-like liftback à la Arteon. The car will have to be able to drive semi-autonomously (level 2), but level 4 autonomous driving should be possible at a later stage with the technology on board. The Trinity will also be placed on a completely new electric platform.
Furthermore, Wolfsburg does not actually reveal anything about the Trinity. It is not yet clear what the exact dimensions are and which part of the EV market Volkswagen is aiming for. However, the car must represent an important step forward for Volkswagen when it comes to the optimization of the EV. Then it’s not just about things like charging speed, range and software, but also production. The Wolfsburg plant must play a leading innovative role in this area. For example, it means that the hardware is largely standardized, after which the customer can activate certain functions against payment via ‘Functions on Demand’.
Volkswagen’s ultimate goal is to become ‘market leader’ in the field of electric driving. By 2030, 70 percent of the supply in Europe must be purely electric, and Volkswagen will allocate a total of € 60 billion for this in the coming decade. In the coming years, this will result in a number of ID models on the modular MEB platform, but a successor to this will eventually come in the form of ‘SSP’. Project Trinity is likely to play an important role when it comes to the next generation of electric Volkswagens.
