Volkswagen ID Unyx: brand new electric SUV

Meet the Volkswagen ID Unyx. That is a brand new electric SUV, of which very few are actually Volkswagens. We are simply dealing with a Cupra Tavascan on which Volkswagen has sprinkled its own design spices.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Chinese Volkswagen policy. Models from the Volkswagen Group brands are technically related all over the world. Just think of the family ties between the Seat Ibiza and the Volkswagen Polo, the relationship between the Volkswagen ID4 and the Skoda Enyaq and the link between the Volkswagen Passat and Skoda Superb. In these photos we actually see a Volkswagen version of a car that you can soon buy in Europe as the Cupra.

The Volkswagen ID Unyx of which AutoWeek has unearthed photos and the first technical specifications from the database of the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology is actually the Volkswagen version of the electric Cupra Tavascan. Just like the Cupra Born is a Volkswagen ID3 with a modified front and rear, this ID Unyx is a Tavascan with a modified design. The Volkswagen ID Unyx has headlights without triangular LED segments and also has its own front bumper. At the rear we also see a clear Volkswagen sauce. This makes clearer family ties with the ID models visible. These adjustments, together with the Volkswagen logos, cannot of course disguise the fact that we have a far-from-Volkswagen Cupra Tavascan in front of us.

The Cupra Tavascan, which will eventually go on sale in Europe, will soon roll off the production line at Volkswagen Anhui. Volkswagen Anhui is a joint venture between Volkswagen, Cupra and the Chinese JAC Motors. Not surprisingly, the same Volkswagen Anhui will produce this ID Unyx for the Chinese market. The first specifications show that the ID Unyx will be 4.66 meters long, 1.86 meters wide and 1.61 meters high. The wheelbase of the 2,166 kilo SUV is 2.77 meters. In any case, there will be a variant with a 231 hp electric motor on the rear axle and a version that also has a 109 hp electric motor on the front axle.

We obviously do not expect the ID Unyx on the market in the Netherlands.
