Volkswagen ID.UX is a new electric sub-brand

ID.UNYX as firstborn

Volkswagen ID.UX is a new electric sub-brand

Volkswagen adds a new brand to its portfolio: ID.UX. What should you expect from ID.UX? In Europe, nothing at all. Volkswagen’s ID.UX is a sub-brand with which the brand will only serve the Chinese market for the time being. And that is not the first time.

About five years ago, Volkswagen transformed the Jetta model name into a brand. Under the brand name Jetta, it sells a handful of cars, the originals of which you are probably familiar with, together with a joint venture partner. For example, the Jetta VA3 shares its base with the latest Seat Toledo and the VS5 and VS7 are based on cars such as the Seat Ateca, Skoda Karoq and Volkswagen Tharu. Jetta is joined in China by a second sub-brand of car brand Volkswagen: ID.UX.

With the ID.UX models, Volkswagen says it is mainly targeting younger target groups. So lifestyle models. That is not just our interpretation. Volkswagen itself speaks of cars with ‘lifestyle-oriented design DNA’. Volkswagen will launch its first ID.UX models on the Chinese market in 2027. The first of these is called ID.UNYX and will be unveiled this year. AutoWeek recently showed you the ID Unyx from all angles. In fact, it is a Cupra Tavascan with a Volkswagen design sauce. It looks like that car will just get Volkswagen badges. It is not clear whether ID.UNYX is really presented as a separate brand or as a model line. Also striking: although Volkswagen says that the first ID.UX model will not hit the Chinese market until 2027, it is already pulling the curtain on that first-born this year.

Volkswagen wants to grow significantly in China. It wants to offer a total of sixteen electric ID models by 2030, five of which will be carried by the new sub-brand. These newcomers include not only models on an MQB and MEB basis, but also cars that use Xpeng technology. Volkswagen also speaks of the arrival of the China Main Platform (CMP), a basis that despite its abbreviation has nothing to do with Stellantis’ hardware. Volkswagen wants to park four ‘affordable EVs’ on CMP technology. It is still unknown whether any of the newcomers mentioned will trickle down to Europe.
