Volkswagen ID4 GTX confirmed

Volkswagen confirms the suspicion that it will introduce the ‘GTX’ sports label for electric ID models. The first car under this label is the Volkswagen ID4 GTX and will be released on April 28.

GTI has traditionally been the Volkswagen hot-hatch, GTE is a sporty plug-in hybrid and now there is GTX, a comparable label for electric models from the ID series. The suspicion that this was going to happen was already there in 2019, but now it is only finally clear that Volkswagen is going to take this path.

The first car to receive the GTX label is the ID4. That is somewhat remarkable, as the smaller and lighter ID3 naturally seems more suited to a sporty version. However, Volkswagen marketers have undoubtedly figured out that the wider and more interesting worldwide crossover is a better candidate.

306 hp

The ‘X’ can also be read here as ‘four-wheel drive’, because the ID4 GTX gets two electric motors, making it the first ID model with four-wheel drive. Although Volkswagen has not yet officially confirmed this, everything indicates that the ID4 GTX will soon have 306 hp. A variant with that capability was announced before we could view the ID4 without camouflage, albeit without the addition of GTX at the time. If this is indeed the same car, the GTX will have access to an 82 kWh battery pack. It is also interesting that this twin-engine version can pull 1,400 kg.

The Volkswagen ID4 GTX will be unveiled on April 28.
