Volkswagen introduces new design language

Future Volkswagen models may look completely different from the cars that the brand has presented in recent years. It announces a new design language and promises to soon show something of it on a brand new study model.

Volkswagen will also be present during the major Auto China, the car fair in Beijing that opens its doors next week. It throws a shadowy picture into the world on which we see the silhouette of a new concept car. It appears to be a – undoubtedly electric – station wagon with a steeply sloping roofline. This may be a silent hint at an electric successor to the Arteon Shooting Brake, but don’t let that fool you. Volkswagen indicates that the new study model has been specially developed for China.

Perhaps more interesting is the fact that the plate is accompanied by the text ‘Design a new era’. In an accompanying letter, the car manufacturer even talks about a study model that is ‘an interpretation of Volkswagen’s new design language’. For a long time, the electric ID models in particular were characterized by a multitude of convex, round shapes. You can even see some of this in the new Tiguan and Passat. The Volkswagen brand has had a new design boss since the beginning of last year: Andreas Mindt. He is, among other things, responsible for the design of the ID.2All Concept, a precursor to the ID2. In contrast to its ID brothers, the EV in the Polo segment is much more tightly drawn. Less playful and more straightforward. It seems that the Chinese concept car shows more of that new, sleeker design language.
