Longer range and faster charging
The MEB platform, which is currently used in more than ten electric models of the Volkswagen Group, will undergo a thorough improvement in a few years and will then be called MEB+. It offers, among other things, an electric driving range of up to 700 kilometers.
In 2019, the Volkswagen ID3 was the first electric model from the Volkswagen Group to be placed on the modular MEB platform. MEB – briefly the electric equivalent of the MQB base – is currently used by various brands of the German group for various cars. Audi’s Q4 e-tron, Q4 Sportback e-tron and the Europe-unavailable Q5 e-tron throne on it, the same goes for the Cupra Born, Skoda Enyaq iV, Skoda Enyaq Coupé iV and the Volkswagen ID4, ID5, ID Buzz, ID Buzz Cargo and the ID6 not available here. In the coming years, various cars will be added to that list, including the Cupra Tavascan and Volkswagen ID Aero. The MEB platform will be thoroughly refreshed in a few years’ time. The modular basis, which is only intended for electric cars, is being further developed into the MEB+ platform.
The current MEB platform has various configurations, with varying wheelbases and different battery pack sizes. The Volkswagen ID3 with 204-hp electric motor and 77-kWh battery, with its range of 553 kilometers on paper, comes furthest on a full battery, but the updated platform makes greater ranges possible. Volkswagen says that a range of 700 kilometers should be possible without further ado due to the arrival of a new generation of batteries. These new battery cells can also be charged more quickly. Volkswagen speaks of charging capacities of 175 to 200 kW. Currently 135 kW is the limit.
To date, the Volkswagen Group has produced more than 670,000 MEB-based cars. Then of course there must be much more. Volkswagen will release ten new MEB models up to and including 2026, including the aforementioned ID Aero and a small electric crossover of which Cupra and Skoda will have a sister model with its own body.
MB in the Netherlands
To date, 14,642 copies of the Volkswagen ID3 have been registered in the Netherlands. The ID4 has so far kicked up to 8,750 copies, the ID5 to 634 registrations and the ID Buzz to 19. 2,723 copies of the Cupra Born have been registered, of the Audi Q4 e-tron 4,665 and of the Skoda Enyaq iV no less than 11,666 units . This brings the total number of MEB models delivered in the Netherlands to more than 43,000. In the future, models from Ford will also be included in that list, which will use Volkswagen’s MEB platform for future electric cars.
