The Volkswagen ‘T7’ is again doing its rounds. We deliberately do not say ‘Transporter’, because everything still indicates that this car only comes as Multivan.
The Multivan is already the passenger car version of the Transporter and therefore plays a marginal role in the Netherlands. In that light you may wonder how relevant a new Multivan is for the Netherlands, but on the other hand there are undoubtedly smart converters who know how to turn it into a (double cabin) gray license plate car.
Moreover, it is simply a completely new product in the Volkswagens Transporter series. The car clearly looks much more modern than the T6.1, the last edition of the Transporter that we have in fact known for many years. It is also clearly fresher under the skin, because the car rests on Wolfsburg’s modular MQB base and will soon appear as a plug-in hybrid, just like many other Volkswagen models.
That platform is also the major limitation, because it actually makes the T7 unsuitable for heavier van work. That is why Volkswagen is planning to carry the T6.1 next to the T7 for many years and to use the latter purely or mainly for passenger transport. This also offers possibilities, because it means that the T7 can be developed entirely as an ‘MPV’ and that the interior with seats is therefore not a retrospective addition, but part of the concept.
The T7 that we see here is again slightly camouflaged, which underlines that the introduction is now really imminent. Volkswagen is still trying to distract attention by adding photos of light units of the competition. In this case, the lights come from the range of Peugeot, Citroën, Opel and Toyota buyers. However, if you look closely, you will simply see the contours of the original light units behind that photo. In the photo below we have tried to clarify this in a somewhat amateurish way.
