Volkswagen must compensate financing interest for fraudulent diesels

Volkswagen took back cars after the diesel scandal if customers wanted to. It now appears that the interest from the financing of these cars must also be compensated.

A German judge decided this on Tuesday, reports the news agency Reuters. A customer filed a lawsuit against Volkswagen because she had bought a Golf with – as it turned out – a tamper-proof diesel with financing. Although Volkswagen bought the car back from her, the woman also wanted compensation for the interest she had already paid VW Bank to finance the car. The German federal judge in Karlsruhe has now ruled in favor of this woman.

In short, the court’s ruling boils down to Volkswagen’s obligation to ensure that such customers are compensated in such a way that it is ‘as if the car had never been purchased’. The repayment of interest already collected is of course also part of this, according to the judge. In the case of the woman in question, this is a compensation of € 3,300.
