Volkswagen records sales growth, especially in EVs

Like many other car manufacturers, Volkswagen saw sales pick up somewhat in 2023. It recorded a growth of 6.7 percent. Growth was particularly good in EVs.

Like many other car manufacturers, Volkswagen managed to sell more cars in 2023 than in 2022. It was not a record year, as was the case with Kia and BMW, for Volkswagen. Not a double-digit growth rate (before the decimal point), but there was definitely growth: 6.7 percent to be precise, for a total of roughly 4.87 million cars sold worldwide.

There was much greater growth, Volkswagen emphasizes, in fully electric cars. Volkswagen sold no less than 21.1 percent more of these in the past year than a year earlier. In total, this involved about 394,000 cars, or about eight percent of all Volkswagens sold. In absolute terms, the Chinese and German markets were the two largest EV markets for Volkswagen, followed by the US, UK, Sweden, France, Norway and Belgium. The ID4 is doing especially well in its home country Germany and the US, the ID3 is the biggest scorer in China.

In terms of numbers, the IDs are of course not yet up to par with Volkswagen’s most popular models with a fuel engine. The T-Roc is Volkswagen’s most popular model in Europe. So many of them have never been sold in Germany, the United Kingdom and Spain as in 2023, although we still owe you the exact figures. Volkswagen proudly reports that the Polo had a record year in Brazil, with more than 110,000 units sold.

Here in the Netherlands, Volkswagen had a year to look back on with satisfaction, as we could previously report. Here it dethroned Kia again as the absolute number one, by selling 34,958 cars. A growth of no less than 33.5 percent and good for a market share of 9.5 percent. Volkswagen owes this to various models, with the Polo at the top. 7,297 of the Polo were sold, making it the sixth most popular new car in the Netherlands. The ancient Up finished in second place at Volkswagen in the Netherlands, with 4,413 units.
