Volkswagen will soon unveil a compact crossover for the European market: the Taigo. It is completely new to us, but it has its origins in the Nivus previously unveiled for South America.
Volkswagen pulled the curtain off the Nivus in Brazil almost a year ago (from photo 4), a compact crossover of which we could immediately report that it would also make the crossing to Europe. Now we get the first concrete sign of life from ‘our Nivus’. It listens to the name Taigo.
As expected, the Taigo is a car that deviates from its Brazilian sister model in detail. Although it is still about design sketches, it can be seen that the bumpers have a somewhat different layout than with the Nivus and the Taigo also has differently arranged rear lights. As with the Nivus, they are optically connected by means of a black ‘bar’, although we also get continuous LED lighting across the entire width. LED lighting will become standard on the Taigo, Volkswagen reports.
Volkswagen Nivus
The Taigo should be seen as a more dynamic alternative to the T-Cross and that immediately betrays its basis. The Volkswagen sits on the same platform as the T-Cross and therefore also the Polo. So count on comparable options on the engine list. The fact that it is based on the Nivus does not mean that – as was the case with the Fox at the time – a Brazilian Volkswagen is heading this way. The Taigo is really geared towards the European market and is also simply built here in Europe. In Pamplona, Spain, to be precise.
The unveiling will take place this summer, but these sketches ensure that there are few surprises left. Volkswagen has planned the market launch of the Taigo for the end of this year.
