The Volkswagen Touareg will get a function that makes it possible to park and unload the mastodon remotely. How could it be otherwise, with the help of an app on your phone.
The new Park Assist system thus goes a step further than the old one. Until now, Park Assist has been an automatic parking aid as we often see it. The car takes over the steering, but the driver still has to brake himself. From now on, the latter is no longer necessary. In fact, the driver does not even have to be in the car. That is allowed, but standing next to the car with a smartphone is also an option.
In that case, too, the procedure starts on the infotainment screen, but then parking can be initiated by means of a specially developed smartphone app. For this it is necessary to continuously press the Drive button, so that the spectators can stop things if necessary. In principle, however, steering and braking is not necessary. If the car has to roll out of the box after things have been done, this can be arranged entirely via the app. The user simply chooses a direction in which the car has to leave the parking space in question, after which the Volkswagen brings it all to a good end.
Although this function can certainly be a solution for a large car like the Touareg, Volkswagen is of course not the first with such a system. With its Display Key, BMW has been offering the possibility for years to have the car drive forward and backward in any case, while Teslas with the FSD package can even roll over a parking lot to their ‘owner’ completely independently. Slowly but surely, these types of systems are becoming more common, of course as a kind of intermediate step towards more and more autonomously operating cars.
