Volkswagen Up

Various media write that the Volkswagen Up has recently gone out of production, but that is not (yet) the case. However, in the very short term, after about twelve years, the curtain will finally fall for the small Volkswagen, whose two sister models had already disappeared.

Various media report that Volkswagen has built the last copies of the Up. That is not the case. Volkswagen did build the very last right-hand drive examples of the now 12-year-old Volkswagen Up in Bratislava. The left-hand drive Volkswagen Up does not have a long life either. The Dutch importer tells AutoWeek that a number of copies will be built until week 43 – the last full week of October. The very last Volkswagen Up will be built in week 43.

Volkswagen Up

It is no longer a surprise that the Volkswagen Up will soon be retired for good. In January we wrote that the small Volkswagen would disappear from the market this year. Technical twin brothers and sisters Seat Citigo and Seat Mii previously went out of production. Nearly 100,000 units of the Volkswagen Up have been delivered in the Netherlands alone. Nearly 3,000 of these were added in the first three quarters of this year. This year there are already more new copies of Volkswagens Up than of the Golf, ID3, T-Roc or Tiguan. The Volkswagen Up had its best sales year in 2013, when more than 16,200 units were registered. In 2018 – when the Up had already been running for about seven years – more than 10,000 copies were sold. That was the last year in which more than 10,000 Upjes were delivered.

For the time being, little is known about the arrival of a direct successor to the Up. We do know that Volkswagen has a compact EV in the pipeline that should cost less than €20,000. We don’t seem to be getting any closer to an Up successor in the coming years. Here you can read more about the different versions of the Up.
