Volkswagen is working on a smaller model under the ID3. We thought so, but sources within the brand have now also confirmed it Autonews Europe. The entry-level EV, of which it is still unclear whether it will be called ‘ID1’ or ‘ID2’, is on the MEB platform and is said to be about the same size as the Polo. It should be on the market in 2023.
Officially, Volkswagen has not released anything about this smaller model under the ID3. What this ‘ID1’ or ‘ID2’ – even that is not yet definitive – will look like and when it will actually come, is therefore still uncertain. The small model will be on the market in 2023 at the earliest. The sources say that the entry-level EV has a similar size to the Polo, but at the same time should also replace the Up. This confirms our earlier outlook on the new model. As a starting price, Volkswagen is reportedly aiming at € 20,000, which will put the small ID in the waters of cars like the Twingo Electric and the Fiat 500e from a price point of view. That seems to clash with the ‘Polo’ format, but don’t forget that Volkswagen also attributes the Golf-like ID3 to a Passat-sized interior. To arrive at the low starting price, the battery capacity will probably be around 36 kWh, according to one of the sources. It may also be the case that both a smaller ID1 and a slightly larger ID2 will come on the market, but that will remain with speculation for the time being.
It is a logical decision for Volkswagen to bring a smaller EV to the market. In 2018 it also dawned that the brand was working on it. In order to be able to continue to comply with the increasingly strict CO2 regulations, the share of EVs in the total supply must increase. The Volkswagen Group is investing heavily in this: up to 2025, the group will be pumping € 35 billion into the development of EVs and by 2030 there should be 70 different EVs in showrooms across all brands. In addition to the current ID3 and ID4, the ID5 will soon be in the pipeline. 2022 will really be a blast for Volkswagen: then the sedan ID Aero should go into production, possibly supplemented with the ID Space Vizzion. In the same year, the ID Buzz and the ID6 should be on the market in 2023. So enough future electric fireworks at Volkswagen.
