As the name suggests

A Volvo Amazett convertible? It doesn’t exist at all, does it? Well, well. This special DIY project by Volvo enthusiast Bas de Koning was spotted on the street by AutoWeek forum member Johan82 and has a special story.
As the name ‘Amazett’ suggests, this is a combination of a Volvo Amazon and Duett. Although the self-invented model name starts with Amazon’s ‘Amaz’, there is really more Duett in the creation. De Koning chose the two cars because they are his favorite Volvos, he says in a letter live stream of the Volvo Classic Association. He only missed a classic open Volvo. So he decided to build that car himself. With its ladder chassis, the Duett formed a suitable basis for a convertible. A PV or Amazon would not lend itself to this because of the self-supporting body.

De Koning got to work with two donor cars and made the rear of the Amazon fit to fit in with the body of the Duett. In the project he used original Volvo parts where possible, but that was not possible with the convertible roof. De Koning first tried with a roof from an unspecified Alfa Romeo, but that didn’t work. In the end he chose to make a hood construction from folding brackets and a custom-made piece of fabric. The photos show that the hood can in any case be neatly folded away.

Volvo Amazett
In terms of finish, it almost seems as if Volvo built the Amazett itself. At first glance, the car definitely does not look like a DIY project, except for the wonderful combination of styles. De Koning does not say in the video what kind of engine is under the hood. If it’s the original B18A four-cylinder from the donor Duett, the car has 85 horsepower. It will of course not be very smooth, but De Koning says in the video that his car ‘drives very well’. We’ll just have to take him at his word. In any case, his car is a colorful appearance in the landscape of the classic Volvo’s!
What do you think of the Amazett convertible? A successful DIY project, or not? We’d love to hear about it in the comments.
