Volvo EX90 is delayed

A setback for Volvo: the EX90 goes into production later than planned. The software for the Lidar systems plays tricks on the Swedes.

The all-electric Volvo EX90 has been available to order for a while, but will not be delivered until next year. That in itself is not news, but it is that it will not be until the fourth quarter of 2024.

CEO Jim Rowan admitted the delay Autonews Thursday at the presentation of the latest figures. AutoWeek learns through a dealer that this means that no Volvo’s EX90 of ‘model year 2024’ will roll off the production line. Cars must be delivered in 2024, but then we are talking about the fourth quarter. The production of the first units for our country will start according to the current schedule in August, after which the first Dutch buyers can get in six weeks later. You can count on October, if you have already ordered. Those who order now will of course receive their turn a little later, although the car must still be registered in 2024.

CEO Rowan stated that the integration of the software required for the Volvo EX90’s Lidar technology takes more time. “We want to make sure that the first time we offer Lidar in our security suite, it works as it should,” said Rowan. The dealer we spoke to makes it even more concrete: “They want to prevent the EX90 from becoming a kind of XC90 2.0.” By this, our interlocutor refers to the problems that the plug-in hybrid XC90 T8 initially had, which even earned the Volvo the title of ‘least reliable car’. The EX90 does not seem finished, and Volvo likes to have it completely ready when customers go out with it. An entirely reasonable position, of course.

All in all, the market introduction of the EX90 will probably take more than a year. You can now order and Volvo recently added a new Single Motor version to the order list. This brings the starting price of the electric EX90 to €83,495.

EX30

Anyone who thinks the EX90 is a bit too big and/or expensive is more likely to have their turn. The smaller EX30 is apparently already finished, which may have everything to do with the fact that this car does not have Lidar. Volvo expects to deliver the first EX30s to customers in February 2024. Those who order now are expected to receive it in March.
