Cyan Racing, the team that helped Volvo to the title in the World Touring Car Championship in 2017, has really enjoyed the Volvo P1800. The results are impressive!
Cyan Racing became WTCC champion in 2017 with the Volvo S60 TC1. This made a Volvo the most successful car in the worldwide championship for the first time. With that result in mind, the men and women of Cyan Racing have set to work with a worthy party song. This P1800 Cyan is the result. A P1800 that has been taken care of from head to toe by Cyan Racing.
To begin with, they have of course removed the four-cylinder from the Amazon and put a contemporary Volvo block back into it. Not just any block, but in the base even four-cylinder as in the S60 TC1 was. However, it has a larger stroke volume here. In the case of the P1800, it is a 2.0 liter, where it was a 1.6 liter in the 2017 WTCC champion. With just under 420 hp, the turbo-charged power source is also a lot more powerful. According to Cyan, the turbo has been adjusted in such a way that there is a fairly linear build-up of power. This has been done to at least keep the characteristics of the engine somewhat close to those of the original, although of course it wipes the floor with it. A five-speed manual transmission directs power through a carbon fiber drive shaft to the 18-inch rear wheels. They are faced with a lot more than before.
Of course, the new power plant cannot just do its job in an otherwise untouched P1800, so they have been busy. Among other things, the car was expanded to create a wider track, got a titanium roll cage and new anti-roll bars at the front and rear for extra stiffness, got a new suspension with double wishbones and huge brake discs with four pistons per caliper at the front and rear. Incidentally, braking is still done without the car intervening where necessary; ABS is not present. Everything to keep it nice and pure. For convenience, the entire bodywork was also redesigned from a combination of carbon fiber and steel. As a result, the P1800 Cyan weighs only 990 kilos, almost 200 kilos less than the original.
You can say that very little has remained original about this P1800, but whether that is bad? It is certainly a special creation. Cyan Racing does not yet say what the exact performance figures of this special restomod are. However, it does seem that several copies will be built. Prices and possible personal adjustments are ‘on request’, they report. You can count on having to dig deep into your pockets.
