Access to Supercharger charging network

Volvo switches to charging connections from Tesla

Another car manufacturer in the United States is switching to Tesla’s so-called North American Charging Standard. After General Motors, Ford and Rivian, Volvo is also turning its back on the CCS connection on the other side of the pond.

Volvo owners in the United States and Canada will soon be able to use Tesla’s Supercharger network. But wait a minute, you can go to Superchargers with a Volvo for a long time, right? Beats like a bus. At least in large parts of Europe. In the United States and Canada, EV chargers are slightly different than you are used to here.

The CCS charging standard is now almost universally applied in Europe, but this is not the case in the United States (and Canada). Non-Tesla EVs generally use the CCS1 plug which is different from the CCS2 plug widely adopted in Europe. Tesla uses a different fast charging connection in the United States and Canada called the North American Charging Standard (NACS). So it is not so easy for non-Teslas to draw power from a Tesla Supercharger fast charger. General Motors, Ford, Rivian and the relatively small Aperta have already announced that they will implement NACS connections in their cars and Volvo is now doing the same.

Volvo is the first European car manufacturer to sign an agreement with Tesla to gain access to the Supercharger network. From 2025, all electric Volvos delivered in the United States, Canada and Mexico will have a NACS charging port. This is good news for American consumers, as Tesla’s Supercharger network has more than 12,000 fast chargers. The location of the Superhargers will be visible in the Volvo Cars application from the first half of 2024. Owners who will soon have an electric Volvo net NACS charging connection can continue to use the chargers that use the CCS connection via an adapter.
