Volvo doesn’t see a future where only SUVs are for sale. Good news for those hoping for successors to the S and V models.
Car manufacturers worldwide have embraced the SUV and many of them are already preferring high-rise cars. Not surprising, because SUVs (and crossovers) sell like crazy. Also at Volvo, just look at the popularity of the XC40 and XC60. Without a high-legged model you no longer participate and it seems that the regular hatchback and certainly the sedan is rapidly running towards the exit. Is there no life in it at all? Well, Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson is adamant that the SUV certainly won’t knock all the other chicks out of the nest.
In conversation with the British coach explains the Swede that new S- and V-Volvos are also coming. “We need low cars with a conventional size, but perhaps a little less angular. These low cars will be offered alongside our SUVs.” According to Samuelsson, it is necessary to continue with it, because of the air resistance. After all, that is quite high for SUVs, while there is such a huge desire for more efficiency. It seems that Volvo’s traditionally angular lines, which have already disappeared further and further, are going away. “Cars will become less angular in the future, because we have to reduce air resistance,” said the CEO, who will pass on the baton to his successor in a few months.
It is still difficult to say which models we can expect exactly. It is quite conceivable that Volvo’s model range in the future cannot be directly traced back to the current range at all. Volvo wants to switch to real names for its models, so we may not have to expect a new ‘V40’ or ‘S90’. The brand already showed some of the future line-up last year. In addition to the already known XC40 and C40, we saw a large SUV – the production version of the Recharge Concept – but also three more compact models, apparently including a hatchback and a sedan-like.
