Volvo triples the production capacity for electric cars. As a result, the Volvo XC40 Recharge supply will be able to keep up with increasing demand. A second model is forthcoming …

Last year, Volvo sold more than twice as many Recharge models than in 2019. Recharge is Volvo’s label for electrified models, both plug-in hybrid and fully electric cars. To keep up with the increasing demand, the Swedish brand is tripling the production capacity for electric cars at the factory in Ghent, Belgium.

By 2022, approximately 60 percent of the cars that will be built at this location will consist of electrically powered models. The factory now produces the electric Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 and the plug-hybrid XC40 Recharge T4 and T5. Production of a new, fully electric model will start this year. This will be revealed in March.

Eventually, other Volvo production facilities will also be adapted to build electrified models. By 2025, the premium brand’s entire new offering should consist of half electric and half hybrid models. Volvo also announced this week that it wants to house all the production of electric motors in-house.
