Volvo is renewing the mild hybrid technology of the XC40. It is more economical and provides better performance. The turbocharged T3 engine is replaced by the B3 mild hybrid powertrain.

Volvo upgrades the XC40 with mild hybrid. Now you can accelerate the SUV with the well-known B4 engine from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds. That was 8.4 seconds – while the power has remained unchanged. This powertrain can be ordered immediately at unchanged prices. That also applies to the B4 with All-Wheel Drive.

B3 mild hybrid replaces T3

The turbo engine T3 is withdrawn from the range. In its place comes the B3 mild hybrid powertrain. This has the same power as the previous T3, namely 163 hp and a maximum torque of 265 Nm. However, the B3 also has a 14 hp electric motor that can give a boost during acceleration. As a result, the sprint from a standstill can be over in 8.4 – the T3 took at least 9.6 seconds.

The XC40 B3 has more advantages. Thanks to the more efficient combustion process, fuel consumption is reduced compared to the turbo engine. The towing weight increases by 200 kg to 1,800 kg braked weight. Finally, Volvo links the B3 to the further developed seven-speed DCT automatic transmission from the XC40 plug-in hybrid. It shifts faster and is lighter in weight. Sailing is also possible with the new transmission, engine shutdown when gas is released. As soon as you press the accelerator pedal again, the gear that suits your speed is automatically selected.

The Volvo XC40 B3 in Momentum version can be ordered from 45,495 euros. There remains one turbo engine without hybrid technology, the T2. That is also the only version that can be switched manually. The T2 is available from 38,995 euros.
