Volvo XC40: only electric and mild hybrid

The delivery range of the Volvo XC40 was once so extensive, but in 2023 it looks very different than a few years ago. Volvo initially supplied the XC40 in an extensive range of regular petrol versions as the T2, T3. T4, and T5. In addition, there were D3 and D4 diesel versions and eventually not only mild hybrid B3 and B4 petrol versions, but also an extensive range of plug-in hybrids and even variants with a fully electric powertrain. At the moment you will only find plug-in hybrids, mild hybrid and fully electric versions on the price list of the Volvo XC40, but the plug-ins will also disappear soon.

The Dutch importer confirms to AutoWeek that the Volvo XC40 will no longer be available as a plug-in hybrid. The Volvo XC40 Recharge Plug-in Hybrid T4 and T5 will officially go out of production in the summer, but the production places for the Dutch market were already taken a month ago. The Volvo XC40 with plug-in hybrid powertrain may still be available from stock at some dealers, but new units can no longer be ordered.

Will the mild hybrid B3 petrol version also disappear from the delivery range of the Volvo XC40 and will the XC40, just like the C40, always be electric? According to the Dutch importer, this is not yet the case. The Volvo XC40 B3 with 163 hp 2.0 four-cylinder and up to 14 hp electrical support will therefore remain available ‘until further notice’ and costs a minimum of €50,995.

As mentioned, the fully electrically powered versions of the Volvo XC40 will continue to exist. The electric XC40 is available as a Recharge Pure Electric with 238 hp from €47,995 and costs a minimum of €49,995 as a 252 hp Pure Electric Single Motor Extended Range. The most powerful electric XC40 is the Recharge Twin Pure Electric Twin Motor with two together 408 hp electric motor. That version costs at least €58,495.
