The Volvo XC90 has been voted the least reliable car, it reports AD based on test results of the British consumer organization WhatCar. The percentage of errors and defects was found to be the highest of all cars in each age group.
Safety and reliability, those are about the two key concepts with which Volvo has established itself in the car market. However, this kite does not apply to the XC90. From the British investigation it follows that of the three to five year old XC90s a whopping 74% have suffered errors or defects. This is the highest percentage of all surveyed cars in any age group. The most common gremlins have to do with the exhaust or emissions control system, followed by malfunctions with the cooling system, door handles and locks, fuel system and turbos. The quality of the interior trim also leaves much to be desired, according to the respondents. In addition, one in six XC90s abandoned their owners in the past year due to downtimes on the road. The survey also shows that the problems are not too bad for the first two to three years. The problems often only start after the warranty period has expired.
The second generation of the Volvo XC90 marked a turnaround for the Swedish brand in 2015. The five-cylinders disappeared from the range, the design became a lot tighter and the brand moved with the times in the field of digitization and gadgets. In addition, the diesel engine has also gone out this year. According to WhatCar The high number of failures of the XC90 is mainly due to problems with production quality. In 2019, however, the XC90 received a facelift, which may have solved some of the problems. Whether this is ultimately the case will have to become clear from further research in a few years’ time.
