Volvo XC90 will continue to exist alongside electric successor

Volvo has an electric SUV-like in the development rooms that will eventually take over the role as the flagship of the XC90. That does not mean that the XC90 will actually disappear, the current model will remain available in a refreshed form next to that electric top model. That is what none other than Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson tells Automotive News.

With the Recharge Concept, Volvo gave a sneak peek at a new large electric SUV-like in 2021 that was thought to replace the XC90. What seems? The already well-known XC90 will remain in the model range for a few years next to the new electric topper. That says resigning Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson to Automotive News.

Volvo will build the electric top SUV, derived from the Recharge Concept, at its factory in Charleston, America, but will also produce the time-honored XC90 in Torslanda, Sweden, for a few more years. “Why stop with the XC90 when there is still demand for hybrids, especially in the United States and China?” said Samuelsson.

Volvo intends to only supply electric cars from 2030, so from that year on, the possible Embla production version of the Recharge Concept will stand alone at the Volvo top. The current second generation Volvo XC90 has been running since 2014 and is not exactly the youngest anymore. This year’s SUV has been slightly modernized several times during its life and it looks like the XC90 will get a refresher before it disappears from the market. “We are still looking at whether we can upgrade the XC90 to make it look a bit better,” said the Volvo CEO. However, don’t count on major technical upgrades. In the Netherlands, Volvo has recently only supplied the XC90 as a plug-in hybrid.
