VVN advocates a speed reduction from 80 km/h to 60 km/h on N-roads

Veilig Verkeer Nederland advocates lowering the maximum speed on N-roads from 80 km/h to 60 km/h. This is reported by ANP. According to the organization, this can save (fatal) traffic accidents on an annual basis.

In April last year, Veilig Verkeer Nederland (VVN) already suggested that the maximum speed on N-roads should be lowered. Now the organization also attaches a concrete speed reduction to it. VVN advocates a reduction of the maximum speed on N-roads from 80 km/h to 60 km/h.

According to Veilig Verkeer Nederland, accidents occur too often on provincial roads. VVN cites police figures and says that 41 percent of all annual fatal traffic accidents occur on 60 and 80 roads. According to the organization, speed often plays a role in these accidents, but many N-roads are not always optimally designed. VVN is of the opinion that trees that are 60 centimeters away from the road on the verge do not fit with a road where you can drive 80 km / h.

Veilig Verkeer Nederland would like to see more speed enforcement on N-roads. “Section checks, mobile unmanned control systems and higher fines for excessive offenders that can ensure more effective enforcement, seem to be mainly reserved for the main road network, while they may also offer opportunities for 60 and 80-kilometer roads. BOAs could also be used to to create a greater subjective chance of being caught,” said VVN.
