VW ID.4 (2020): prices, dates, pictures, market launch

That is how far the electric VW ID.4 goes

VW gives details of the second all-electric car before the first is on the road: You can find all information about the VW ID.4 electric SUV here.

VW makes no secret of the electrical strategy. Many cars are supposed to start on a common basis, all of which run exclusively on electricity. The start will be made in summer 2020 with the VW ID.3, a compact electric car with Golf dimensions. The ID.4 follows a little later: the all-electric SUV is based on the VW Tiguan.

4 was already parked hidden and well camouflaged on the VW stand at the IAA 2019. Part of the panel is now falling. Originally, the manufacturer wanted to present its electric SUV at the Geneva auto show. After her rejection, the manufacturer is now streaming images, video and text all over the world. The content remains: The electric SUV is coming.

500 kilometers range

So far, VW has been holding back with the specific data for ID.4. The SUV should drive 500 kilometers purely electrically with the largest battery. It starts with rear-wheel drive, followed later by all-wheel drive variants with an additional front engine. The manufacturer does not want to reveal more. After all, the SUV shouldn’t steal the show from the compact ID.3.

However, the group’s modular principle already allows a closer look at the technology of the VW ID.4. The manufacturer will presumably offer the same battery packs as in the ID.3: The smallest stores 45 kWh, the middle 58 kWh and the large 77 kWh energy. These are net values, the gross battery capacity is higher.

Depending on the equipment and engine, the ID.4 will travel around 300, 400 or 500 kilometers with these batteries – not quite as far as the ID.3, because it is flatter and lighter. The disadvantage in consumption also applies to electric SUVs, not just to combustion engines. The all-wheel drive variants could also lose a few kilometers of range.

How quickly the batteries charge depends on the features of the ID.4. Ex works it can be charged with a maximum of 50 kW of electricity. VW can optionally install a charger with 100 kW. The upper limit in the modular system is currently 125 kW. The car can charge a maximum of 22 kW at AC wallboxes.

VW ID.4: four-wheel drive with two motors

VW will also use the ID.3 as a basis for the drives. The rear engine with 150 kW output (204 PS) has already been confirmed, a second drive with 110 kW (150 PS) is at least indicated. Both are available in ID.4. In the modular system, front engines have a power of up to 75 kW. The most powerful VW ID.4 has a total of 225 kW – the equivalent of 306 hp. It is quite possible that VW made this version sporty.

How the Wolfsburg drives and batteries combine is still unclear. The smallest battery and the weakest motor probably belong together. More power then inevitably means more range – and vice versa. The manufacturer is also likely to couple certain equipment to the drive. For example, a large battery would be hard to imagine with a small charger.

VW is still giving the ID.3 a bit of a head start. As soon as things get more specific with the first model in the series, we should learn official details about the ID.4. We expect the official presentation by the middle of the year at the latest. The first cars could reach dealerships in the course of 2020.

The ID.4 is larger than the ID.3, and it is also available with more luxurious features (e.g. all-wheel drive). We therefore expect a higher base price. The ID.3 starts at 30,000 euros. The ID.4 could start at 37,000 euros. After deducting the electric car premium, it would then be about as expensive as a bare one VW Tiguan – and even a little cheaper than one with comparable performance.
