In the overview of cars from the 80s that are still driving around the most, it was already noticeable that the most exotic models came to the Netherlands mainly later. In this list you can see which 1980s models have the highest share of imports, i.e. copies that previously made kilometers with a foreign registration.
It will come as no surprise that you only come across expensive, unusual models in this overview. Among the greatest survivors of the 1980s, we saw that more than three quarters of them were also sold new in the Netherlands for models such as the Opel Kadett, Ford Escort or the Citroën 2CV. This list mainly concerns exotics, enthusiast cars that have been imported as classics.
Porsche
For example, the majority of the 1980s Porsches that are still driving around in the Netherlands come from abroad. Even with the Porsche 944, the model above the entry-level 924, the import share is 83.5 percent. Of the 2,152 Porsche 911s that are now registered in the Netherlands and built between January 1, 1980 and December 31, 1989, even 91.0 percent were imported, which amounts to 1,959 units.
Off-road vehicles
You can also see that in the 1980s there was little need in our country for off-road vehicles such as the Mercedes G-class, the Toyota Land Cruiser and Land Rovers. These 4x4s of iconic status from that period were almost all eventually imported from abroad.
corvette
But the Chevrolet Corvette has the highest proportion of copies that previously had a license plate from another country. Of the 880 C3s and C4s (because those are the generations that were newly registered in that decade), no less than 99.2 percent were imported.
