What is it like to be deaf?

I wonder how those people live, how they survive in our society, what we do to make it easier for them, and why people become deaf?

I’m talking about the people who become deaf and are not born deaf!

Answer

Dear Charlotte,

People who become deaf later in life usually have learned to speak earlier like you and me. So they can just speak to the people around them. Due to the fact that they are deaf, they cannot of course hear what is being said to them, but people can learn to lip-read and thus understand the message. It is important that you speak slowly enough and do not articulate excessively. In addition, it is also possible to learn to communicate in sign language, but the problem is that not everyone can speak in sign language, so you cannot communicate with everyone in this way.

There are many reasons why people can become deaf: certain diseases (eg meningitis), hereditary disorders, an accident with a head injury, staying in loud circumstances too much,… Sometimes the cause is also unknown.
