White House consults with Ford and GM about chip shortage

The US government is reportedly planning new summits with companies dealing with the global chip shortage, including major chip makers and US auto groups.

Press agency Bloomberg reports based on insiders that Ford and General Motors, among others, together with companies such as Intel, TSMC, Samsung Electronics, Google and Amazon, have been invited to discuss the problems surrounding the chip shortage later this month. Last month, there was already a virtual summit meeting about the shortage of chips, which mainly affects the car industry. Top executives from various large companies were also invited for this. The White House has not yet responded to the news of a new summit.

“We are working on it, but there is no quick solution,” said trade minister Gina Raimondo on Friday about the chip shortage. She emphasized constant contact with companies in both the automotive and chip sectors. For the long term, the solution, she says, would be to make the United States less dependent on chips from China and Taiwan. So more chips should be made in the US itself. Earlier Audi pointed out that here in Europe more attention should also be paid to local production of chips. According to CEO Markus Duesmann, an investment in such production could be classified under the same model as investment in European battery production.
