Why are children with ASD often aggressive?

It is often heard that children with autism can be aggressive.

Is it because the brain function is not responding properly or are there other causes that play a role?

Thanks in advance.

Answer

Children with ASD do not understand the world around them sufficiently. If something small changes, it is exactly a ‘completely new situation’ for them for which they no longer have any manual. This completely confuses them, causing them to panic and run wild (which comes across as aggressive behavior). In addition, children with ASD do not have sufficient perspective-taking skills that allow them to empathize with our thoughts and feelings. So they don’t know what the effect of their behavior is on us, so they ‘can’t’ take this into account.

By making the world predictable, clear and clear, you can prevent a lot of aggression. In addition, perspective-taking training is also a tool to teach children to see that people have feelings and that how you say and do something is important.
