Hospitals mainly have elevators and regular stairs. Why are there escalators in shopping centers and not in hospitals?
Answer
Dear Chris,
I don’t think there is an unequivocal answer to this. Not all hospitals are escalator-less, for example. There is one in Gasthuisberg in Leuven in the entrance hall. I don’t know all hospitals in Belgium, but there are probably several that do have an escalator. Why there might be few, I think may have to do with the fact that hospitals have a lot of people with wheelchairs and baxters. For these people an escalator is impossible, they have to use an elevator. In the design of the hospital, they may therefore rather opt for an elevator and stairs.

Ann
