Why did people only consider People’s Temple a cult after this collective suicide?

In many situations people only realize afterwards that something has gone wrong. eg. the rise of Nazism…. Sometimes there are people who say that a certain evolution is wrong, but the problem is to convince several people of that…. Are you sure that before that nobody really pointed to the fact that it is here is it a cult? Or that it was a violent cult?
