I recently started working out and use protein shakes as an extra supplement. Because I take these, I have to regularly wind and they can smell very bad. The people around me sometimes react ‘severely’ to this. How come? And is there any way to fix this?
Answer
Protein supplements are enriched in protein but may also contain other substances, including various sugars. If the preparation you use is based on whey, it also contains the sugar lactose. Many people cannot digest lactose. Then your intestinal bacteria do that for you, but they produce smelly gases as a waste product. To remedy this, you can try other supplements that do not contain whey, possibly based on vegetable products. This is not yet a guarantee because beans, such as soya, can also contain indigestible sugars. If you still want to use protein shakes instead of natural protein-rich foods, you should try several of them.
