Why do people wear light-colored clothes in the summer?

A first reason may be that people like to see light colors in the summer, but there is also another important reason why people usually wear light colored clothes in the summer.

You’ve probably noticed that when sunlight hits a black object, it heats up. This does not happen with a white object. This is because a black object will absorb the rays and a white object will reflect the rays. The black object will then heat up due to the absorption of this sunlight.

So if you wear clothing that is dark in the summer, this clothing will partially or completely absorb the sunlight. This causes the clothing to heat up. When you wear light clothing, it reflects the sunlight so that these garments will not heat up or very little.

You can easily test this yourself by placing 2 objects, one black and one white, in the sun on a sunny summer day and then feel after a while which object feels the warmest.
