The iPhone 14 is rumored to charge faster than an Apple phone ever did: with a maximum of 30 Watts. It’s progress, but don’t expect too much from it.
iPhone 14: fast charging up to 30W
If you have the right charger, you can quickly charge the iPhone 13 Pro at 27 Watts of power. This means that half an hour is enough to bring the battery to 50 percent. It then takes another hour to fully charge the iPhone.
With the iPhone 14 Pro, this charging is faster – although it is a minimal difference. According to Apple leaker Jioriku, an iPhone 14 Pro charges in the first minutes with a power of 30 Watts. After that, the software would reduce the power to 26 Watts to prevent excessive heat build-up.
So you only benefit from the improved charging speeds for a few minutes, after which the charging is just as fast (or just as slow) as with the iPhone 13 Pro. To use it, you need a 30W USB-C adapter. You can get it for about 45 euros. You can also use your MacBook’s adapter.
Slow compared to competitors
So the iPhone 14 Pro will probably only charge for a few minutes at 30W – and that’s not a wattage to show off. Oppo has been offering smartphones that charge at speeds of up to 150 Watts for some time, such as the OnePlus 10T. The manufacturer will soon even come up with a phone that supports speeds of 240 Watts. A phone does not need longer than 9 minutes (!) to fully charge.
The Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi, for example, is also doing better. The Redmi Note 11 – a budget phone, of course – achieves charging speeds of 120W. Rival Samsung does not provide such figures, but the Galaxy S22 also charges faster than the iPhone 14 Pro: with a power of 45 Watts.
Fast charging really gets better with iPhone 15
The fact that the iPhone does not excel in fast charging has everything to do with the charging port. Apple phones are equipped with Lightning, which allows slower charging speeds than USB-C at the same voltage.
Fortunately, the iPhone 14 series seems to be the last with a Lightning connection. to be. Apple is rumored to equip the iPhone 15 (Pro) with USB-C. That is also necessary, because new EU legislation obliges manufacturers to provide electronic devices with the universal USB-C connection. This is to combat e-waste.
On Wednesday, September 7, Apple will present the new iPhone 14 series. Do you want to stay informed of the developments? Sign up for our newsletter:
