Your immune system attacks anything foreign, so why are the gut bacteria left alone?
Asker: Bodhi , 12 years
Answer
Our intestinal flora is attacked when the bacteria end up where they should not be, such as the urinary bladder. The intestine consists of several layers and the innermost layer (this is the layer that our stools come into contact with) is called the epithelium. This layer must not be damaged, otherwise the bacteria will enter our bloodstream and our immune system will attack these strangers. The function of our intestinal flora is to help digest our food so that it can be absorbed by our body.
