Why not put high voltage lines underground?

Power lines are ugly; they ruin the landscape. Living under them is also not recommended and they are a danger to balloonists and the like. Residents resisted to the Council of State if a new line had to be drawn. Why not put them in the ground like so many other pipes?

Answer

Hi Didier,

I’m not a specialist, but I saw your question open for a while.

Listed below are some disadvantages of burying power lines:

– safety (soil subsidence and earthworks)
– heat emission in the ground is limited
– periodic inspection is much more difficult or impossible
– upgrading to higher currents is more difficult
– defects are less easy to detect

Kind regards,
Luc.
