In our direct price comparison with a number of competitors, the expensive Volvo C40 turned out to be less pricey than we thought. Yet they found in Sweden that their electric SUV coupe could still be a lot cheaper. They drop the price by more than 10,000 euros! But they do ask for something in return.
You lost almost 58,000 euros for the special Volvo C40 Recharge Intro Edition. If you transferred that amount to the Volvo dealer, you would receive a five-year note in return. Anyway, that Intro Edition is nicely decorated. In addition, it has two engines that together produce 408 hp, four-wheel drive and a battery pack (78 kWh) that will take you at least 437 kilometers according to the WLTP standard. A traffic light sprint to 100 km/h clears the twin-engine Volvo C40 in a sickening 4.9 count.
Volvo C40 now from 46,495 euros
Do you not need it so intense, but would you like a Swedish SUV coupe with a plug? Then the Volvo C40 with one engine is completely your car. The entry-level C40 is only driven via the front wheels, which get a manageable 231 for their rubber teeth. In the Core version, it is available from 46,495 euros. This means that the C40 is now a lot closer to competitors such as the Kia EV6 and the Volkswagen ID.5.

Still, the new base version of the Volvo C40 gets a fixed panoramic roof from the factory, as well as the Google infotainment system, an extensive park assist package and 19-inch light-alloy wheels with four-season tires.
For the less price of more than 10 mille compared to the C40 Intro Edition, you therefore deliver 177 hp. This makes a hundred sprint of 7.4 counts possible. That is still easy and has the advantage that you do not have to scrape your children’s second-hand breakfast from the seat backs after every traffic light sprint.
Almost the same range
Often when a cheaper version of an electric car comes, you get a smaller battery pack. So it’s no surprise that the single-engine Volvo C40 has a battery capacity of 69 kWh, instead of the 78 kWh. But because the new power variant has to carry 140 kilos less in car weight, it costs you hardly any range.
According to Volvo, the electric C40 with 231 hp will still take you at least 431 kilometers far. That is only 6 km away with the minimum WLTP range of the C40 Twin Engine! Just like with the more expensive models, fast charging works with 150 kW. The fact that the entry-level vehicle has a top speed of 160 km/h instead of 180 km/h is not an issue in our country. Do you really want to tow a caravan with your electric Volvo C40? Then it is good to know that the entry-level model can withstand a 1500 kg braked trailer on its towbar. That is 300 kg less than the Twin Engine version is allowed to carry.

Incidentally, you are no longer dependent on the pricey Intro Edition for the Volvo C40 with 408 hp. The entry-level version of the twin-engine C40 is now called ‘Plus’ and does not cost EUR 57,995, but EUR 56,495. All prices at a glance:
