The door ajar

At AutoWeek we regularly take a look at new models that may also be coming to Europe. Today we have another one and it is certainly not for the first time from the Chinese BYD. The brand has captured the design of its competitor in cars such as the Kia EV6 in Europe.
The large Chinese BYD has managed to rapidly expand its European delivery range in a relatively short time. Because BYD’s ambitions to grow in Europe are significant, the brand appears to be planning to expand its model range here as well. Before the BYD Dolphin was confirmed for the European market, we already wrote about the possible arrival of the model and the BYD Seal U, which will come to the Netherlands next year, was also discussed well before its official European digital debut. Other interesting BYDs that may come to Europe are the compact Seagull and this electric top sedan BYD’s sub-brand Yangwang could also come to our corner of the world, judging by the patent drawings of that car recorded in Europe. Today we shed some light on the BYD Song L.
BYD Song L on patent image.
In August this year, BYD presented the Song L. The Song L was the production version of the almost production-ready Song L Concept that debuted in China at the beginning of this year. Just like the electric Kia EV6, it is a relatively stretched crossover with a slightly sloping roofline. AutoWeek has found recently registered patent drawings of the Song L Concept in the database of the European Patent Office (photos 3 to 8). Those of the study model, yes, but they may indicate that BYD is considering shipping the Song L to Europe.
The Song L is an EV from BYD’s so-called Dynasty line, a series of models that are somewhat similar in design terms and that also includes the Han, Tang and the Atto 3 in China. It is 4.84 meters long, 1.95 meters wide and 1.56 meters low. It has a wheelbase of 2.93 meters and is based on the modular e-Platform 3.0, a base of which you will also find a variant under the Seal and the Dolphin. There are no detailed technical specifications yet.
BYD Bao 5
Tongue twister
We have also found European registered plates of the Bao 5, a hybrid and almost retro-style SUV that BYD is linking to a new sub-brand with a name that will make your tongue twist: Fengchengbao. BYD describes the Bao 5 (photo 9 and 10) as a ‘super hybrid’. So it is not an EV. If that car also comes to Europe, it will probably miss the Dutch market.
Do you see opportunities for BYD Song L in the Netherlands? Why or why not?
