X (formerly Twitter) plans to remove blocking other people soon. But is that allowed?
Will you no longer be able to block people on X / Twitter?
Recently, Elon Musk (the owner of X, former Twitter) hinted between nose and lips some striking future plans. He said in one response that he wants to remove X’s blocking function. But can he just do that?
Actually, we can be brief. Yes, he can. Elon Musk owns X, so he can do whatever he wants with it. But there are consequences to that. The AppStore and Google Play Store require that an app like X / Twitter must have a function to block other accounts.
Block accounts: function will remain for a while
On Twitter, other users can add context to messages when additional information is desired. This often invalidates messages or gives you more information about the subject. When the message about the blocking appeared on Twitter, the community quickly added quite a bit of extra information.
When the function to block someone is removed, Apple and Google will remove the former Twitter app from their App Store. The only way you can still use X is via the website.
Blocking function on X must go: but why?
The reason why Elon Musk wants to remove the function is not known, but it can probably be guessed. Many users block the sponsored messages you see between tweets. Many users with a paid account (and therefore a blue verification check mark) are also preventatively blocked by non-paying accounts. Musk is probably trying to accommodate the advertisers on X with this.
