Williams presents FW44: back to the top of F1?

Williams Racing has unveiled the Formula 1 car for the 2022 season. The legendary team, which has had some very tough years, is going for a completely different color scheme than last year.

The Williams Formula 1 team has not been doing well in recent years. Hopefully 2022 will be the year in which the racing stable finally finds its way back to the front. The FW44 is the car that should make that possible. Like all the other F1 cars already unveiled, it’s a big change from the previous car (although we don’t see the final design here yet), but especially Williams. The team from Grove is going for a completely different color scheme. Even more than last year, the typical Williams blue is the basis of the livery. In addition, it is striking that it has won an important new sponsor with Duracell and that it is prominently displayed on the car. Dorrilton, the investment company that took over Williams from the Williams family in 2020, has also placed his name prominently on the car. The power source is again from Mercedes.

However, as promised by the new owners, the Williams heritage will remain alive. This means, among other things, that the name Williams Racing and the Williams logo are still on the car. The name also fits in a long tradition. After all, the ‘FW’ in FW44 stands for Frank Williams, the iconic founder of the team, who passed away last year. In this first season without Frank Williams being able to watch, Williams hopes to be able to go for points regularly again. The former top team finished last in the constructors’ championship in the 2018, 2019 and 2020 seasons and did not even score a single point in 2020. Last year it managed to trump Alfa Romeo and Haas, but this year the racing stable wants to be able to participate in the midfield at least. Drivers Nicholas Latifi (start number 6) and Alexander Albon (start number 23) hired from Red Bull are tasked with making the most of the FW44’s potential.
