There is plenty of choice if you are looking for a music streaming service. Deezer is one of them and in this article we explain how the iOS app works and how to get more out of it.
Deezer app as an alternative to Spotify and Apple Music
Deezer was founded in 2007 by Daniel Marhely and Jonathan Benassaya in Paris. The service is now available in more than 180 countries in the world and there are more than 16 million users, of which 6.9 million pay. That is not as big as the music service Spotify and Apple Music, but for many Deezer is the perfect alternative. The app gives you direct access to more than 43 million songs. In this article we explain how the music service on the iPhone works.
Create an account and subscribe
Before you can use the app, you need to create an account. This can be done in various ways: via Facebook, Google or with your e-mail address.
By default, you get a 30-day free trial of Premium + for which you pay nothing. With that you have no advertising, you can listen to unlimited music, you can save songs offline and you have access to better sound quality. Normally you pay 9.99 euros per month for Premium +.
After the trial period, you can use Deezer for free, without the above-mentioned benefits of a paid subscription. You can therefore only listen to mixes on your mobile. In addition to the free and Premium + subscription, there is also Deezer Family. For EUR 14.99 per month, up to six family member profiles get access to Premium +.
Main screen
The main Deezer screen has selections of playlists and popular songs. For example, you can see which 100 songs are most listened to in the Netherlands. You will also find the new releases on the main screen.
If you have been using Deezer for a while and tap the heart of your favorite songs, the music service will put together a personal soundtrack for you. It’s called Flow. Deezer compiles this list based on what you like and gives you suggestions of songs that fall in that vein. This can be both older and new music.
Profile
On the personal page you will find recently listened to music and favorite songs. You can also go directly to playlists and albums that you have saved here. The settings are shown at the top right of the profile screen. Here you can adjust the sound settings, for example the quality and whether you want to download over the mobile network. Under ‘App’ you will find, among other things, how much storage space Deezer takes up. You manage your subscription under ‘My account’.
Search and listen to music
You can find artists or albums you want to listen to via the search function at the bottom right of the app. Deezer presents the results grouped together by artists, albums, songs, playlists and profiles. To see more, tap ‘show all’.
If you tap on a song, you will be taken to the playback screen. Here you can pause the music, go to a previous or next song and mark music as a favorite. There are also options to stream music to other devices via Google Cast or AirPlay and bluetooth. You can also easily add songs to a playlist or choose the repeat and shuffle function within this screen.
If there is a microphone on the album cover, you can tap it to view the lyrics. Many songs have that option, but newer songs not always.
Friends
Like Spotify, Deezer also has the ability to follow people. You can then check friends’ pages to see what their favorite songs are and what playlists they’ve created.
