Xenon and MOT

Techzle reader: Anton Timmerhuis

“I want to install xenon lighting myself in my Seat Ibiza. My question: is that allowed, in view of the MOT? I know that this lighting should not blind oncoming traffic, but should I also take into account things like headlight washers and height adjustment? ”

Patrick Hillebrand (Maintenance and repair specialist at Bosch Car Service):

“The regulations regarding xenon (gas discharge lamps) at the MOT has been changed a while ago. The requirement to have headlamp washers and automatic height adjustment no longer applies. For vehicles put into service after December 31, 2006 and equipped with gas discharge lamps, these lamps must remain on when the main beam is on. So far no issue for the MOT. Naturally, the adjustment and confirmation must also meet the requirements. But we are not there yet. If we look at the websites of suppliers of conversion sets, it is striking that they offer sets that are not intended for use on public roads! This is because there is no European permission for LED or xenon lamps with, for example, an H-base, such as an H4 or H7 lamp. This is not enforced at the MOT, but the police can! If it is possible to convert your Seat with genuine parts, it might be worth it. If the intention is to build in a set based on the base of the original lighting (H), I would not recommend it. “
