The somewhat sluggish invasion of the European car market by the Chinese Xpeng to date is reinforced with two new models: the G9 and the P7. The Xpeng G9 is a large electric SUV, this Xpeng P7 is an electric sedan with which Xpeng aims its arrows at cars such as the Tesla Model S and Mercedes-Benz EQE.

Highlights

  • Model S, EQE and Nio ET7 size electric sedan
  • Like Long Range and Performance
  • Up to 576 kilometers range
  • Richly equipped as standard and from less than €50,000

Last year, Xpeng decided to postpone the European introduction of the P5 until further notice, so the Scandinavian-available G3 remained Xpeng’s only car in Europe. It soon became clear that this would not be the case for long. Xpeng has long been pleasing the Dutch consumer who is in the market for a large electric sedan with photos of the P7. The Xpeng P7 is now actually ready for the Dutch market and we immediately know what you have to pay for it. What seems? The Xpeng P7 offers great value for relatively little.

Dimensions

What does the Xpeng P7 compare to? To answer this question, we will first go through the dimensions of the electric sedan with you. The Xpeng P7 is 4.89 meters long, 1.9 meters wide and 1.45 meters high. It shares its 2 mm after 3 meter long wheelbase with the Xpeng G8, also presented for the Dutch market. In terms of size, the P7 is therefore quite comparable to cars such as the Tesla Model S and Mercedes-Benz EQE, although the distance between the front and rear axle is considerably larger (+12 centimeters) with the latter. The Xpeng P7 also has a competitor from its own country: the Nio ET7. However, the Nio ET7 wins again in length by ten centimeters from the Xpeng P7.

Like the Nio ET7 and Mercedes-Benz EQE, the Xpeng P7 is a sedan. You can store 440 liters of luggage in the back. That is neatly in line with what the EQE (430 liters) swallows and more than what fits in the back of the Nio ET7 (363 liters). It is not yet known what the P7 likes with the rear seats folded down. With an empty weight of 2,020 to 2,2180 kilos, the Xpeng P7 is not a lightweight, but that is not very surprising given the electric powertrains that Xpeng hangs in it.

Design

The Xpeng P7 weighs at least two thousand kilos and is packaged in a way that is now well known. The design language called Dynamic Aesthetics with which the P7 is drenched can also be found on SUV G9, so the two can immediately be recognized as brothers from the outside. Just like the Xpeng G9 and nowadays a large number of other models, the Xpeng P7 has flat LED lighting that consists of an LED strip over the entire width of the front. A floor below we find an opening in which Xpeng has housed the actual headlights. Like the G9, the Xpeng P7 has recessed handles in the doors and a side that has remained free of noticeable creases or stripes.

The lighting is also cut into two layers at the rear. The flat LED taillights are connected by a wide LED strip that runs over the sedan lid. The brand name of the P7 is written out centrally on the tailgate. That you drive an Xpeng, can be seen.

Technology and performance: up to 576 kilometers of range

You would think that the Xpeng P7 will get the same electric powertrains as SUV brother G9, but nothing could be further from the truth. Like the Xpeng G9, the P7 is available as a rear-wheel drive Long Range and as AWD Performance, but there is no Standard Range and the specifications of the engine versions are also different, as are the battery packs with which the Xpeng P7 is available.

The Xpeng P7 Long Range is rear-wheel drive and has a 276 hp and 440 Nm stronger electric motor. This means that the Xpeng P7 buzzes to a speed of 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds. The battery pack of the Xpeng P7 is 86.2 kWh in each version (net: 82.7 kWh) and can be supercharged with up to 175 kW with new power. For comparison: the G9 Long Range has a 98 kWh battery, a 313 hp electric motor and can charge up to 300 kW. Although the battery of the P7 Long Range is smaller than that of the G9 Long Range, it does get (slightly) further. The electric range of the Xpeng P7 Long Range is a very decent 576 kilometers. Mind you, that is a WLTP value.

The only other engine version is called AWD Performance. The Xpeng P7 AWD Performance has the same 276 hp electric motor on the rear axle as the P7 Long Range, but also has an electric motor on the front axle. That is good for 197 hp and gives the four-wheel drive Xpeng P7 Performance a system power of 473 hp and 757 Nm. This makes it far from Model S Plaid-like, but with a 0-100 sprint in 4.1 seconds you will of course not be short of anything. The top speed is just like that of the P7 Long Range at 200 km / h. The range of the Xpeng P7 Performance is of course slightly below that of the Long Range variant at 505 kilometers. Every Xpeng P7 has Brembo brakes all around.

Unloaded

As with the G9, Xpeng with the P7 seems to bet on value for money. Like its SUV brother, the Xpeng P7 is also packed with delicacies as standard. You will not find three displays such as the Xpeng G9 has in its dashboard in the P7. You do have a 15-inch infotainment screen and a 10.25-inch digital instrumentation as standard. Leatherette upholstery is standard, as are heated front seats with extensive adjustment and a memory function. A heated rear seat is standard, as are dual-zone climate control, a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel, ambient lighting, an induction charger for your phone and a range of USB sockets.

More standard Xpeng indulgence comes in the form of a panoramic glass roof, V2L technology for charging other devices, 18-inch alloy (Performance: 19-inch), an electrically opening tailgate, an extensive audio system and virtually all passive and active driving systems you can imagine. Automatic high beam, smart adaptive cruise control with traffic sign recognition and an active lane assistant: just like a 360-degree camera and numerous warning systems, it’s all there, on or on.

From less than €50,000

Xpeng markets the P7 quite competitively. The Xpeng P7 with 276 hp electric motor and 576 kilometers range stands for €49,990 in the Dutch order books. For comparison: the Nio ET7 costs €84,900 including battery and covers 445 kilometers on a full battery. A Mercedes-Benz EQE is available as an EQE 300 from €71,138. For that amount you get 245 hp and a range of up to 651 kilometers. More expensive, but again a larger range.

The Xpeng P7 AWD Performance has a Dutch starting price of €59,990. Based on the Performance there is also a special Wing Edition. The Xpeng P7 Wing Edition costs €69,990 and has the same powertrain as the Performance, but an even more complete equipment. For example, you get soft-close doors, the most extensive audio system, leather upholstery and ventilated front seats as extras. The Tesla Model S is available from €114,990. Mind you, then you will get an executioner of a sprint gun that reaches 100 km / h in 3.2 seconds and with which you can drive up to 634 kilometers electrically.
