Yamaha recalls FJR1300 again for gearbox issue

Having to roll out a recall because the previous recall was not executed properly, that’s what Yamaha did with the 2016-2020 FJR1300, which was found late last year to have the second gear sprocket breaking.

Yamaha recalls FJR1300 again for gearbox issue

Research had shown Yamaha late last year that the second gear sprocket was not strong enough to support loads at high revs, which could cause hairline cracks and, in a worst-case scenario, even break the sprocket.

Yamaha rolled out a worldwide recall for the 2016-2020 FJR1300, to replace the gearbox’s main shaft and compound shaft with stronger parts. In addition, the ECU was reprogrammed to prevent extremely high revs in the event of a false neutral.

However, with that reprogramming, Yamaha now appears to have been a bit too enthusiastic. Under certain conditions, such as when the throttle is applied before the clutch is fully released and the engine revs unexpectedly, the ECU responds by limiting the RPM.

This limit is programmed by Yamaha to prevent the second gear cog from being subjected to excessive forces. However, this rev limiter appears to intervene a little too enthusiastically, creating the chance that the engine will accelerate much less strongly than the rider would expect.

The ECU will now be reprogrammed again at the Yamaha dealer.
