Occasions with a high seat
Did you have that too? Bought a King’s Day ticket and already drooling at the Jaguar XK, Maserati Coupé and Porsche 911 that we presented to you last week … there is no price. We had the same. Misery made us ten years older in one fell swoop, we had to walk with a cane and are therefore forced to look for a higher car, an SUV or crossover this week, due to the easy entry. We have also reduced our budget: we are going to the showrooms with 14 grand.
Because we always want to portray a mix of brands and models in this section and Mitsubishi, SsangYong and Suzuki were still conspicuously absent until now, this time we show three compact crossovers from these Asian brands: the ASX, the Tivoli and the SX4 respectively. S Cross.
Mitsubishi ASX 1.6 Cleartec Intense – 2013 – 98,818 kilometers – €13,450
What is it with Mitsubishi’s ASX? The current one is a Renault Captur with three instead of one wybertje, while the previous generation had many facelifts in order not to lose attention. This Mitsubishi ASX, signed in November 2013, has the so-called Jet Fighter grille and that is the only optical highlight of the 1-SRJ-92, because further external features are foreign to it.
One owner to date for this ASX
But the clientele may not be waiting for that either. They are looking for a not too large, fairly spacious and well-equipped crossover that can take them from A to B for years without any problems. This very black copy on the outside and inside does just that. To begin with, the brand dealer offers it, has had only one owner who has not driven a ton with it and the asking price includes a one-year Bovag warranty. In addition, it is quite a spacious car: the trunk is narrowly the largest and especially in the front and in width you will not be short. This also applies to the Intense version. Things like a panoramic roof and xenon lighting including headlight washers are only found on this ASX from those portrayed.
We are less enthusiastic about the driving characteristics. The steering is very light, shifting (especially the first two gears) on the other hand rather difficult. In terms of driving pleasure, it is certainly not an inspiring occasion. The same applies to the rather gloomy interior with reasonable furniture. In short: in many ways you can not go wrong with such a used ASX, but it does not evoke warm feelings either. Perhaps the first choice for the intended target group (as described above), but we are too curious to see what SX4 S-Cross and – especially – maverick Tivoli have to offer.

Suzuki SX4 S-Cross 1.6 Comfort/Exclusive – 2014 – 68,064 kilometers – €13,945
The tricky thing about import occasions is that different specifications often apply abroad. This Suzuki SX4 is a good example of this. Notably offered by the official dealer, it is referred to as both ‘Comfort’ and ‘Exclusive’. However, we miss, among other things, the panoramic roof that is on the – Dutch – Exclusive, while the existing folding exterior mirrors do not belong on the Comfort.
SX4 S-Cross is light
No reason to leave the R-271-VZ for now. Because although it is slightly more expensive than the ASX (also here including a one-year Bovag warranty – always nice with import), it is also younger, while the mileage is considerably lower. In addition, the Soes has a little more color (brown paint, blue rings in the counters). Good, because this Japanese does not flaunt his appearance either.
The SX4 S-Cross is a lot lighter than its competitors (1,060 kilos compared to over 1,200 for the others) and that is reflected in the lowest fuel consumption and ditto road tax rate. We wouldn’t be surprised if the Suzuki has the most modest running costs because of this. Despite this lower weight and a comparable engine in terms of power, the performance is not higher. In any case, the SX4 S-Cross is more pleasant than sporty. Striking is the fairly smooth rear suspension. Especially after significant thresholds, the stern is quite willing to heave.
An inexperienced four-wheeler with enough space for people and luggage, that’s what this occasion is. And more: we already touched on the fairly rich equipment and with 1,200 kilograms of braked towing weight, it beats the other two, while the maximum payload is also the highest at 670 kilograms (ASX 1,100 and 635 kilograms respectively, Tivoli 1,000 and 540 kilograms respectively). Cons? The choice of materials could be better here and there, while the seating comfort, just like its compatriot, can be called reasonable at most.

SsangYong Tivoli 1.6 Quartz – 2015 – 69,717 kilometers – €12,950/€13,840
Strange duck in the bite is the SsangYong Tivoli. New only with an atmospheric 1.6 for sale (there was also a 1.6 diesel) which made the car virtually unsaleable due to the CO2 tax. The result: considerable depreciation, so that a used Tivoli can actually be interesting. In order to have a sufficient supply, they are therefore also imported from abroad, which also applies to this SsangYong Tivoli. The first price includes a fresh MOT, we go for the extensive delivery package, including a one-year Bovag warranty. With €13,840 he is in between the other two, but is a lot younger. And more exclusive, because when was the last time you saw one driving?
Tivoli is comfortable
If you opt for a Tivoli, you will get the most comfortable car of these three. In terms of equipment and in terms of space, it is neatly in line with the other two, with the headroom in the front being particularly pleasant. So does the furniture; we felt most at ease at the Tivoli sessions. This may also have to do with its calming character, because it is by no means sporty. The steering is typically South Korean-of-yore light, the lack of a rear stabilizer bar (which the Suzuki also lacks) makes it not an enthusiastic bending knight: the high carriage is willing to lean over. No, the Tivoli comes into its own on straight roads with smooth asphalt. The sixth gear ensures that the engine does not rev too much, which promotes peace on board. This also reduces fuel consumption, although without approaching the (factory) figures of the competition. In any case, the Tivoli seems to us to be the most expensive to use, because try to trade it in again after a number of years. For safety fetishists: the Tivoli scored 4 stars in the EuroNCAP crash test (5 for both Japanese). Striking: the body warranty was only valid for 6 years, so it expired in 2021 (the 12 years of ASX and SX4 S-Cross ensure that they only expire in 2025 and 2026 respectively).

Which of these three Asian crossovers suits you?
In summary: the SsangYong Tivoli is exclusive and comfortable, but lacks refinement and sophistication in several areas. Much more commonplace and therefore more accessible are the Mitsubishi ASX and the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross. The latter stands out for its manageable running costs. The ASX actually does very little wrong, but does not provide warm feelings. Which of these three would be your occasion?
