Second hand PHEV twice, HEV once

A while ago we were looking for three EVs for 10 grand and the outcome was not easy: scant supply and what was offered had an equally limited range. Because we are all concerned about the climate (yes, aren’t we?), this time we are taking an intermediate step. We go shopping for the same amount, but now a hybrid is on the wish list. Every little bit helps, doesn’t it?
The reason we are looking for an ex-tax addition, is of course due to the fact that these cars were purchased en masse at the time because of the attractive addition, so Prius, Outlander and the like are obvious. But… many of them have been exported over the years. Are the leftover crumbs attractive enough for us used car buyers?
The powertrain that gave it a low addition when it was new: 1.8 hybrid with 136 hp.
Toyota Auris 1.8 Full Hybrid Dynamic – 2010 – 156,778 kilometers – 9,999 euros
When it comes to hybrid, we can’t ignore Toyota. Initially, only the Prius was offered. For those who thought that car was too goat’s wool socks, could later also choose from the Auris or luxury brother Lexus CT 200h. For 10 mille we also find a Yaris Hybrid here and there, but we go for such an Auris. Less controversial than the Prius, more attractive than the CT in terms of age/mileage and roomier than the Yaris. Considering our budget, for example, this Toyota Auris just qualifies. It is available at the official dealer and comes with a one-year Bovag warranty as standard. But we would also dare to buy this Japanese without it, because given its proverbial reliability, it has just been run in with one and a half tons (by two private owners). He also looks farm-fresh.
The Toyota Auris was more striking on the inside than the outside.
The 47-NHB-1 is designed as Dynamic, but this occasion is not really sporty: although tight handling, but also distant steering. The technique is interesting. There are two electric motors; one to drive purely electrically and one as a literal helping hand when accelerating. This way you can easily keep up with the traffic and still drive economically. The well-known CVT automatic transmission serves as the transmission. If you give full throttle, it will roar, just like the Dafjes of yesteryear from which the box is derived. Don’t, so: that gives more peace and refinement. But it is clear: the drive does not provide sportiness either. The equipment is quite spacious: driver’s knee airbag, electrically folding exterior mirrors, reversing camera, cruise and climate control, light and rain sensor, alloy wheels … At least more spacious than the trunk: only 279 liters. Fortunately, the rear seat can be folded down in parts, because a trailer is also not possible. This occasion does have a bracket for a bicycle carrier. Maintenance is required every 15,000 kilometers. Quite quickly, but if that guarantees a long and trouble-free life, then we don’t make a fuss about it.

The Mitsubishi Outlander inside with an interior built to last for decades.
Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Instyle – 2013 – 324,666 kilometers – 9,999 euros
A decade ago, Mitsubishi dealers were inundated with mainly business lease drivers: an SUV with a low addition that could also pull a large trailer, that was something new. The Outlander went like hot cakes. It is now massively out of lease and just as massively exported. In our occasion file we come across one copy for around 10 grand and that is this white Mitsubishi Outlander.
Lots of leather and electrically adjustable in this second-hand plug-in hybrid
Undeniably more car than the Auris on all fronts: more space for people and luggage, more luxury (including leather upholstery, electrically adjustable and heated front seats, xenon lighting, electrically opening tailgate, navigation system, parking heater, brake and hill assist and sliding roof) and more (pulling) power (4WD, 1,500 kilos of braked towing capacity), but also with a mileage that is twice as high! Now Joep Schuurman has tested an Outlander PHEV with almost 307,000 kilometers of experience in Klokje Rond van AutoWeek 6-2022, and it received a well-deserved thumbs up from him. Could it be that the provider sells it including a one-year Bovag warranty? Or that this occasion has only had one owner who always had it maintained by the brand dealer? Anyway: on photos the car still looks pretty fresh, so reason for a closer acquaintance.
Always maintained at the brand dealer, this Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.
PHEV stands for plug-in hybrid
It is known: PHEV stands for plug-in hybrid. If you plug in as much as possible, drive short distances on electric power, don’t accelerate too abruptly and don’t go faster than 125 km/h, then a wonderful consumption figure is possible. The specified 1 to 52.6 is therefore purely theoretical and practically unattainable. There are several driving modes and the degree of braking force can be adjusted by means of steering paddles. In short: the drive system is also more ingenious and more extensive than that of the ‘regular’ hybrid Auris. Who dares to get the 3-SVP-42 past the 4 ton mark?

Such a Volvo has a nice interior, even by today’s standards.
Volvo V60 D6 AWD Plug-in Hybrid Limited – 2013 – 267,357 kilometers – 9,895 euros
Most brands link electric power to a petrol engine, some suppliers (also) used a combination of diesel and electricity, such as PSA (Peugeot/Citroën) and Volvo. Diesel may be out of favor for many people, but we also want to portray a self-igniter in these columns. Thus we arrive at this Volvo V60. Not a hatchback (Auris) or SUV (Outlander), but a station wagon. With a bear of a diesel (five-cylinder, two turbos) in the front. Just look at the system power, performance and – above all – the system torque: 640 Nm! No wonder the four-wheel drive Swede can pull 1,800 kilos with brakes.
This plug-in hybrid is a bit more expensive to drive
And if you always hang it on the charger, then theoretically fabulous consumption figures are also possible here. An ideal combination? Maybe. An ideal occasion? We dare not say. Look, less than 270,000 kilometers is peanuts for a Volvo diesel. It’s more about the history of the JK-276-T. Built in 2013, imported in 2016 and since then had four owners, it is a bit less clear than the other two cars. Plus, it goes without warranty. If we add that to the complex technology (with several driving modes here too) and the premium content of Volvo, then you know that repairs can be quite a turn. In any case, this occasion will be the most expensive in terms of operating costs. So why attention? Well, that wonderful five-cylinder roll, those fantastic seats (leather upholstery, heated and electrically adjustable front seats, including memory system), the beautiful, quiet design of the outside and inside … Plus that it is a Limited version unknown here. ‘Number 41’ is written on the steering wheel. For what that’s worth. In terms of safety and equipment, the Volvo beats the other two, and also when it comes to driving characteristics. It does not feel log, despite the fact that the hybrid technology makes the car almost 300 kilos heavier compared to the regular diesel. Anyone who feels called to travel to Gelderland.

Which of these three hybrid former addition bangers suits you?
Three different bodies, three different powertrains. Comparison is therefore impossible. But still: which of these three occasions would be your choice? Or do you prefer (still) a Prius or, for example, an Opel Ampera/Chevrolet Volt or Volkswagen Golf/Jetta/Passat GTE. Or maybe the variability of the Ford C-Max Plug-in Hybrid? Let us know!
