Flush EV occasion thinner for this money

It had to happen one day: EVs in Opzoek Naar … Because ten thousand euros is an amount that not every Dutch person has in his or her back pocket, let alone that such a sum of money is or can be spent on a used car, let’s not go over that this time. With the ever-rising second-hand prices in mind, we are very curious which current mobiles are eligible for that money. And what distances we can cover with it…
To get straight to the point: for 10 grand, the flush is thin. We do not consider refined microcars such as Citroën Ami and Opel Rocks-e, as well as the ‘bare’ Renault Twizy. What remains? Pioneers such as the triplets Citroën C-Zero, Mitsubishi i-MiEV and Peugeot Ion. Originating from the EV era jug and therefore almost unusable in terms of range, unless exclusively intended for (Wadden) island use or other trips around the church. That is why we also leave these, so that on the day of publication only Nissan Leaf, Renault Zoe and Smart Fortwo remain. Electric driving is therefore certainly not for everyone!
Nissan Leaf – 2012 – 71,870 kilometers – 10,885 euros (incl. subsidy 8,885 euros)
As long as the subsidy pot is filled, we can increase our budget by 20%. But in order not to be unpleasantly surprised if it turns out to be empty during the signing of the purchase contract, we keep the financial room for maneuver limited. Thus we arrive at, for example, this Nissan Leaf that is offered by the brand dealer.
Leaf is a bit like goat wool socks
The Japanese were early with this somewhat goat’s wool socks-like hatchback: the first generation came in 2010, before Tesla offered its own cars (the Roadster came from Lotus). Generation three is now in service, the NX-570-P is the original version. That meant a modest net battery capacity of 22 kWh, an AC charging capacity of 12 kW, so that the average charging time from 20% to 80% was 1 hour and 19 minutes (fast charging not possible) and a range of 175 kilometers. Values that applied to a new car.
The Nissan Leaf inside.
We don’t dare to say what these are after almost 11 years and more than 71,000 kilometers, but you can count on a nice bit of degradation. That makes this occasion nowadays especially suitable for smaller work, and that’s a pity, because the Leaf is a real five-person hatchback that has been filled with luxury by the manufacturer: navigation system, reversing camera, cruise control, electrically folding exterior mirrors, rain sensor, light metal rims … The (light blue) metallic paint was an option. This contrasts beautifully with the light and airy interior that exudes a high-tech atmosphere. Either way, you’re driving something special.
Such a Nissan Leaf has quite a lot of space in the back.
Next charging session coming soon
The drive itself is less startling, in that the front wheels and undercarriage of this 2011 Car of the Year handle the power with ease. So much so that you soon press the power pedal deeper, with all the consequences for the range. That’s where the law of diminishing returns comes into play. Because the Leaf may still be comfortable, quiet and economical, spacious and generously equipped, its limited EV capacities ensure that you mainly focus your attention on the next charging session.

Renault Zoe Q210 Zen – 2014 – 92,810 kilometers – 11,900 euros (incl. subsidy 9,900 euros)
If the choice falls on a used Renault Zoe, calculations are necessary: one is offered including a battery, with another the battery rental is added. In the latter case, count on about 75 (annual mileage: 7,500) to 125 euros (without kilometer limit) per month. If the battery capacity is less than 75%, Renault will install a new one. Now we know the story of a Kangoo EV owner whose orderer (2013, mileage 136,000) has only 50 kilometers of range in winter, while the battery capacity is still 76% according to Renault. So no replacement. That literally doesn’t help.
Then just a Zoe including battery. Like this Renault Zoe whose battery capacity is still 94% after 9 years and almost 93,000 kilometers according to the provider. The KT-936-R is two years younger than the Leaf, but has more mileage and is more expensive. Plus – except for the trunk – a size smaller: the comparison with group colleague and B-segmenter Clio is urgent (the Leaf is C-segment), but it is not a derivative of it. Fun exterior details, such as the lighting units with blue accents, indicate the different concept. This is also the case inside: light and airy, but also cheap-looking plastics and a fairly high seating position. It sometimes seems as if you are driving a bumper car, in our experience. The possibility to preheat the interior and a navigation system that includes an overview of nearby charging points clearly indicate Zoe’s EV signature.
22 kWh but also more economical
Just like the Leaf, the Zoe has a – modest – battery capacity of net 22 kWh. Because the Frenchman is just a bit smaller and therefore more economical (stated consumption 14.6 kWh per 100 kilometers), this would take you 210 kilometers. Also applies to a new car, but if 94% battery capacity is actually still present, then you will get a step further with a Zoe than with the Japanese. Which in turn looks more mature on several fronts.

Smart Fortwo
Smart Fortwo Coupé Electric Drive – 2014 – 23,703 kilometers – 10,950 euros
In addition to Leaf and Zoe, you could until recently buy used EVs such as the Volkswagen e-Up and Smart Forfour for our budget – fully-fledged four-person cars. Those times are over. Only the two-person Smart Fortwo emerges from the meager offer. Out of less than a handful of copies, our choice fell on this Smart Fortwo, because of its low odometer reading. The advertisement does not mention subsidy. We hope that this will be settled, because this is an import Smart and then you just have to keep your fingers crossed that the odometer reading is correct. On the other hand, the seller is a Bovag company and the car is offered with a guarantee, so that does provide certain certainty. There is also certainty that you can never take more than one passenger with you!
Actually, the Smart Fortwo should have been electric from the start
Electric drive is perfect for a city car like the Smart. In fact, it should have been equipped with it from the start. For years, the petrol cubes were tortured by couriers until they prematurely gave up the ghost en masse. No, then the Smart as an EV: it is an ideal crawl-by-sneak-through car with a ridiculously small turning circle. The range of 145 kilometers specified at the time does not allow long distances on major roads, so it is ideal for all kinds of delivery services within built-up areas.
In addition, it also drives nicely. Because of its minimal dimensions, everything seems to go faster than in reality, the reactions to the power pedal are also amazingly smooth. Both people have plenty of space, the interior is a mixture of playful and strict black, the seats could be better. Handy is the radar that sees whether there is traffic in front of you. If so, it will brake more strongly on the engine when the throttle is released in order to recover more energy. The first owner of the R-499-FG also installed the optional 22 kW fast charger, so going from empty to 80% takes 45 minutes instead of 3.5 hours for the standard 7.2 kW charger.

Which EV is right for you?
In summary: we can’t ignore it: you can hardly find a decent EV for 10 grand. The Achilles’ heel is the limited range, which also indicates how fast developments have been made in that area. double? Then the Fortwo is enough for you. Families seek refuge in the more mature Leaf or in the Zoe, which is just a little further along. And otherwise … a subscription to public transport plus folding bike and rain suit? It’s even cheaper too! Even better, because more carefree: an occasion with the ‘old-fashioned’ combustion engine!
