Difficult search for €10,000, but an additional 5k becomes easier
Some time ago we profiled three EVs costing around 10,000 euros. An amount that many used car seekers have to wonder about, but nevertheless the offer was meager: an old Nissan Leaf (new range: 175 kilometers), the small Smart ForTwo (which once ranged 145 kilometers on a battery charge) and a Renault Zoe with which you could drive 210 kilometers in its heyday before it had to be put back on the charger. That’s about it.
We are now almost half a year further. The range of used EVs is constantly increasing and we are increasing our budget by 50%. Is it possible to buy a decent electric car for 15 grand?
Hyundai Ioniq EV Comfort – 2018 – 139,345 kilometers – 14,950 euros
Because 2023 is already well advanced and we (therefore) do not know exactly how much money the SEPP subsidy pot is still filled with, we are not counting the possible 2 thousand subsidy and simply set the limit at 15,000 euros (and therefore not 17 thousand). This Hyundai Ioniq can be found at your charging station for five bucks less. In less than five years, three owners have traveled almost 140,000 kilometers with it. They must have had to plug in quite a bit, since the specified range (NEDC) was 280 kilometers. Not impressive if you look at the current one specs looks, but still usable more than that of the 10 mille-Leaf. The battery pack is therefore not too spacious, which is beneficial for the vehicle weight: 1,420 kilos. Moreover, it is 80% charged in three hours on an AC charger (25 minutes on a fast charger is also possible). It is offered with a one-year warranty. With the TV-738-P you get a fairly well-equipped, five-person used car under its slippery carriage (cW value 0.24), where rear passengers do not have to be taller than 1.80 meters to stand upright due to the sloping roofline. can sit.
The relatively young age of this South Korean can be read from various accessories (navigation system, DAB radio, several safety aids, adaptive cruise control, LED lighting, etc.), as do three driving modes (Eco, Normal, Sport) and the possibility of regenerative braking using paddles behind the steering wheel. The immediate availability of 295 Nm ensures lightning acceleration (except on damp road surfaces, when the tires have a hard time), the good feedback, direct steering actually provides a touch of sportiness. If we also say that the command post is clearly laid out (with a touchscreen in combination with physical buttons), we can conclude that this Ioniq can be considered one of the better successful EV pioneers.

Volkswagen e-Golf – 2018 – 143,153 kilometers – 14,950 euros
If you, as an EV driver, would rather not stand out too much in traffic, know that there are used electric versions of Ford Focus and Mercedes-Benz B-class for 15 grand. However, with ranges of 162 and 200 kilometers respectively, they are rather poorly endowed. And the Volkswagen e-Golf? Please note: initially it was supplied with a 26.5 kWh (116 hp) battery, good for a range of 190 kilometers, in 2017 there was an update: 35.8 kWh (136 hp) that promised 300 kilometers (NEDC).
An example of the latter is this Volkswagen E-Golf, which is quite similar to the Ioniq in terms of age, mileage and asking price. Unfortunately, the advertisement does not mention a warranty (or subsidy), but we do know that the German comes from the first owner. When it comes to charging, the Golf scores less well than the Ioniq: with the SB-320-N it takes 52 minutes on the fast charger before it reaches 80%, regular AC charging takes more than three hours and fifteen minutes. to achieve that. As mentioned, the e-Golf hardly differs from the regular one in terms of bodywork. So there is plenty of headroom in the back. In principle also in the front, but the seat is higher because the battery pack is placed underneath. The e-Golf is also a bit heavier at 1,515 kilos, making driving more relaxed than sporty.
Even more relaxed? Then put it in ‘Eco’, with its limited top speed of… 95 km/h (and non-working air conditioning)! Regenerative braking is also possible here. Not using flippers, but putting the lever in B takes care of almost everything one pedal driving. The interior is ergonomically designed and well built. Many of these types of electric Golfs have been purchased for business purposes. This occasion also applies and that translates into an almost un-German luxury version with, among other things, leather upholstery, heated front seats and – always handy – a heat pump.

BMW i3 REX – 2014 – 125,187 kilometers – 14,950 euros
If you, as a potential EV driver, want to make a statement to your environment, then there is really only one solution: purchasing a used BMW i3. A remarkable body – it looks as if it has been in a pile-up, judging by the window line – equipped with opposite-opening rear doors and composed of a carbon passenger cage and an aluminum chassis, and an equally special interior (BMW used natural and recycled materials such as plant fibers and PET bottles respectively), ensured that -ie early EV adapters became a gadget.
The result is high used car prices. For 15 grand we only find the 22 kWh version in our database, good for only 190 kilometers. The 33 kWh variant (range: 312 kilometers (NEDC)) is above our budget. Alternative: the REX. This version also includes a two-cylinder Kymco scooter engine of 647 cc (34 hp) that charges the battery when it is only 8% full. So a hybrid, and that means road tax! You don’t have to experience charging station stress right away, provided you fill up with petrol! Then the theoretical range is 240 kilometers. Plus point: our battery degradation tests show that battery cells seem to benefit from the combustion engine: there is less degradation. Just a REX then. From the offer we came across this striking orange painted BMW i3. Driven slightly less than its opponents, four years older, while no mention is made of warranty. With its leather interior, electrically operated glass sliding/tilting roof and a number of safety systems, it is, together with the Golf, the most luxurious and also offers space for families, albeit with two children, but a travel/holiday car for four is -he isn’t. The luggage space is too limited for that. The driving characteristics are completely BMW: fast acceleration, ‘meaty’ steering, excellent cornering behavior. AC charging from 20 to 80% takes just over 2.5 hours; the shortest loading time of these three.

Which of these EVs suits you?
In summary: with the BMW i3 you make a statement, but this is at the expense of the price/performance ratio. However, it is the most luxurious together with the Volkswagen e-Golf. The latter is ‘just’ a Golf and therefore not an ID 3, with all the advantages and disadvantages that entails. Hyundai’s Ioniq is the purest EV of the trio, complete with a smooth body. Tall rear passengers will find this less pleasant. What would be your choice for 15 grand?
